    We are recruiting for a Rail Designer to join our Stairlifts Team based in Andover  You will be designing bespoke stair lifts from surveys obtained by sales advisers and distributors.


    The role includes providing production drawings to tight deadlines, for Rail Fabrication across three different sites to manufacture rails for curved stair lifts and for installation engineers across the world for installation.  This requires a high level of concentration, speed, accuracy and problem solving skills as well as team working skills to take a customer order from survey to manufacture and installation.



    1. Correctly interpret customer surveys, documents and drawings to provide a stair lift to the customers needs, requirements and specification
    2. Accurately convert digital and manual surveys into 3D staircases in order to design a rail which will best fit the actual staircase and avoid aborted installations and remakes
    3. Identify missing/conflicting information with customer surveys and/or documents, potential issues in achieving rail design rules or installation of the stair lift and carry out appropriate action via relevant stakeholders to resolve all queries in a timely manor to maintain progress of all orders within relevant lead times
    4. Initiate approval process, supplying customer and order entry with completed drawings and appropriate communication, to ensure rail is put into manufacture in a timely manor, in line with requirements in terms of approval and non approval contracts
    5. Ensures adherence to company policies and quality standards ISO 9001, via management of contract history by accurately completing KBM, check sheet and documentation of all communication for each customer order to finish rail design process
    6. Ensures compliance of all curved stair lift in terms of product, manufacturing and regulatory limitations by adhering to and applying rail design rules and different requirements and regulations of each country, to produce good consistent rail design solutions for all rails including complex rails and multi-flight rails
    7. Interpret customer requirements and resolve all queries to ensure timely completion of a rail design drawing, to enable other resources involved in fulfilling the customers order to deliver their own processes/tasks at the appropriate times for delivery of a stair lift to the customer’s requirements. Accountable for achieving the drawing timescales to agreed output and quality targets
    8. Responsible for accurately judging when to make a compromise on a design, considers and weigh up options in a timely manner so as to make the best decision for the customer
    9. Indentify improvements in digital surveys and drawings, when checking own and others work, to ensure no aborted installations or remakes. Report any trends to manager
    10. Support in resolving remakes, carrying out remake surveys and producing a rail remake drawing
    11. Ensure customers, distributors and visitors have the appropriate level of understanding of rail design, supporting with demonstrations of rail design practices and survey training
    12. Encourage team building, supporting development of the team by share knowledge and skills to help and teach less experienced rail designers

    This list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be expected to undertake any duties within their capacity to meet the needs of the business and/or the Rail Design function.


    • Demonstrates proven experience working effectively within tight time constraints
    • Previous work experience is not essential, as consideration will be given to individuals who have recently qualified from further education
    • Experience of 3D CAD systems is essential; ideally in SolidWorks. Some experience of AutoCAD is desirable


    • Capable of interpreting customer surveys
    • Ability to prioritise and organise workloads in a pressurised environment
    • Knowledge of KBM systems and eDrawing is desirable
    • Excellent computer skills for MS Word, Excel and Lotus notes
    • Ability to work unsupervised
    • Excellent attention to detail with a capability to produce accurate work
    • Ability to learn, understand and apply new information
    • Ability to solve problems


    1.15 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. Monday to Thursday (1/2 hour unpaid lunch) plus 15% shift allowance
